The Pause Test: How to Tell If Your Ad Looks Expensive
Want to know if an ad looks expensive? Pause it.
Motion hides a lot. Music, cuts and voiceover can carry a weak ad for a few seconds, which is why so many ads feel fine while they play and forgettable the moment they end. A still frame hides nothing. That’s the idea behind the test we use in the edit suite at LUMOVEX™ Europe.
How the pause test works
Freeze the ad on five frames: the very first frame, three from the middle, and the last one. Then ask three questions of each.
Question 1: Is every frame lit on purpose, or just bright?
Bright is not the same as lit. A cinematic frame has a direction to its light: a key light that shapes a face, shadows that add depth, a rim of light that separates the subject from the background. If a frame is evenly bright from edge to edge, nobody made a lighting decision, and it shows.
Question 2: Is there one clear thing to look at?
Great frames guide the eye. Within half a second, the viewer should know where to look. If the frame is crowded, flat or split between three competing subjects, the message gets lost before the story starts.
Question 3: Would this frame work as a poster?
This is the toughest question and the most useful one. Movie posters are single frames that sell a whole story. If you could print one of your frames, put your logo on it and hang it in a lobby, you’re working at a cinematic level. If none of your five frames could stand alone, the ad will feel cheap, no matter what it cost to make.
What the score tells you
If most of your frames fail, the problem isn’t your budget. It’s the decisions: light, focus and composition are choices someone either made or skipped. If most of your frames pass, you’ve got something cinematic, and your audience will feel it even if they can’t explain why.
Try it today
Run the pause test on the last ad your company published. Count how many of the five frames pass all three questions. Then run it on your next ad before it goes live.
If you’d like a team that makes those decisions on purpose, every LUMOVEX™ Europe project starts with a storyboard. Request a free storyboard for your next ad; if it’s a fit, it’s on us.
